THE MOTIVES BEHIND INCEST
……………………………………………….
The following segment is an incest story from the Bible. It describes the selfish root in the heart of a man who uses incest to his gain, only to later lose everything. From this story we are going to be able to extract a lot of information that will help us recognize how the curse of incest harms a family bloodline.
To preface the story from 2 Samuel, Amnon was the oldest son of King David with his second wife, Ahinoam of Jezreel. Amnon was the heir apparent, or next to become King to the throne of Israel after King David. Amnon, feeling romantically attracted to his sister Tamar, acted on advice from Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, to lure Tamar into his quarters by pretending to be sick and desiring her to cook a special meal for him. As we will read here, while Tamar was in Amnon’s quarters, he raped her despite her protests, He then had her expelled in shame from his house.
Let’s read the following verses: 2 Samuel 13:2, 4-5, 10-15.
13:2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.
13:4-5: Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my … sister.” Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill.
And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’” …
13:10-15 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate[a] me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing.
13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”
14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her.
In this account, Amnon felt romantic love and sexual lust for his sister. Amnon’s romance and lust for his sister turned into hatred once he defiled her. While King David was angry about the incident, he could not bring himself to punish Amnon. However, Absalom, Amnon’s half-brother and Tamar’s full brother, nursed a bitter grudge against Amnon for the rape of his sister. Two years after the rape, Absalom arranged for the murder of Amnon to avenge the rape of their sister Tamar.
What we can learn from this bible story about signs someone has a spirit of incest?:
- At first they view incest as unthinkable. They know it is wrong.
“…and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.” - They are tormented by the devil with thoughts of desiring the act of incest.
“…Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar…” - Their love is not love.
“I love Tamar, my … sister.” What Amnon thought was love was a predatory and selfish urge. It is not love that inspires incest. It is impulsivity and desire for what is forbidden (concupiscence). It is a passion that counterfeits and degrades pure motives. Godly love is unselfish and undemanding. Evil longing is a feeling that wants to be filled and satisfied from an object of focus. - They are interested in stealing what’s beautiful in the object of their affection.
Verse 1 of 2 Samuel 13 says, “Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar.” Amnon surely noticed her beauty as a virtue he wanted to steal long before he defiled her. - Their assault is strategic and premeditated.
Verse 3 reads, “But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man.” Amnon was so obsessed with his sister that he got advice from his corrupt friend. - They isolate their victim.
In verse 9 of the story Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. Sexual incest victims are victims because they are alone. Emotional and spiritual incest victims are also singled out, their relationship being called “special” so the victim is more easily drawn in close to the predator. - They appeal to a victim’s naïveté and giving nature.
Johadab helped Amnon to incest his own sister by telling him how to trick her. “Pretend to be ill” is another way of saying, take advantage of her caring nature. - They are manipulative.
Verse 6 says: …so Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” Sexual, emotional and spiritual predators are not innocent as they make themselves out to be. They plan and they scheme. They research ahead of time about how to manipulate you. - They dismiss the other person’s feelings.
When Tamar pushes back and says, “where could I carry my shame?”, her brother would not listen to her. - They cannot be reasoned with.
Tamar reasoned, “And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel.” Amnon had no conscience. Impulsiveness risks all personal character, and all future losses, penalties and consequences. - They break all boundaries.
“…being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.” Predators do not see boundaries, only their own ungodly hunger. - Their hearts are corrupt.
“Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred.” After her brother defiled her, Amnon added to Tamar’s shame by hating her. - They are passionate in extremes.
“…the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her.”
As we can see, in an incest-affected family, instead of the elders caring for and leading up the children in the biblical model of righteousness, the family with the spirit of incest will undermine and defile purity and demonstrate a hypocritical religious lifestyle.
Incest brings heavy burdens of shame on individuals and families. In this story, it also caused Amnon to lose the throne, never to serve as King of Israel. It also caused him to lose his life. The burdens of incest can affect even people who were not involved in the family, such as in the case of Absolom, who due to his anger for the rape, arranged for his brother’s murder. These scars can last for generations.
The incest curse will continue in a family until it is identified, renounced, repented for and any related demonic spirit (and thus behavior) is cast out by the believer. Otherwise, the curse perpetuates perversion and shame within the family, generation after generation.
Defeating the curse of incest in a family requires forgiveness. Christians must choose to forgive victimizers, while at the same time using great discernment and boundaries when dealing with the family members.
PRAY THIS PRAYER TO FORGIVE
Abba Father, I have not realized how much of my life energy, time, care, compassion, love, trust and innocence have been consumed by predatory people in my life. People who were family and friends kept telling me it was me, not them and that I was too sensitive. Father the devil is a liar and he will lie to me NO MORE! I am taking back my stolen time and virtues by forgiving those who have harmed me just as You forgave me for harming You. I, too, once had evil in my heart toward you God. I was once defiled by unclean spirits and rebellious before I came to the cross to be redeemed and cleansed. I am sorry for not forgiving those who victimized me and those who did not stand up to protect me sooner. And I am also sorry for not drawing a strong boundary against their manipulations, setting myself apart, like the bible says Christians must do. King of Glory, I ask for you to wash me of all unforgiveness in my heart, to heal my heart and soul, and cleanse me as I read the rest of this prayer out loud. The bible says you collect every tear that I cry. So I know you see my tears and you care about me, even if my family did not and maybe they never will. But you care God and that is enough. It is everything! I thank you God for loving me so much that you sent your only begotten Son to die for me so I could have eternal life. My life in the past may have been stolen away in many ways, but you have already made a plan for me to know the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge, that I might be filled with all the fulness of God. In you I have over and above all that I could ask or think according to the power that works in me (Eph 3:19-20). I thank you Jesus Christ Son of God for creating a way for me to come out of the curses of a rebellious bloodline and to become new and purified to live as a king and priest on the earth (Rev 5:10), ever glorifying your precious Name. In Your Holy Name I pray Amen.
It will be initially difficult for a person inside a family with the curse of incest to steer clear of emotional soul ties with family members. But God can be trusted to fully break these ties and heal your heart, body, soul and spirit. Christians have ALL power and authority over the devil and so in order to ensure that the devil does not steal any glory or virtue from your family any longer, take up your cross and follow Jesus and leave the soul ties behind. Live out what the Lord wrote for you when He planned your life.
- NEXT STEP: Pray this prayer to renounce any incest curse from yourself and your family members.
