Katherine Kuhlman: Python in the Pulpit – Greek Brotherhoods and their Charismatic Slaves (Acts 16:16)

Kuhlman’s biography says:

[Apart from the well-documented healings, the most sensational phenomena associated with Kuhlman was “going under the power” (sometimes referred to as being “slain in the Spirit”) as people fell when she prayed for them. This sometimes happened to dozens as a time and occasionally hundreds.

She was catapulted toward national fame by a seven-page laudatory article in Redbook (feminist) magazine. Kuhlman was an incessant worker and gave meticulous attention to every detail of her services; everything had to be first-class. Conducting them herself, she was on her feet for four to five hours at a time. 

She was very dramatic in gesture and consciously deliberate in speech.  She was a strikingly tall redhead and dressed elegantly. Her friend and biographer Jamie Buckingham admits: “She loved her expensive clothes, precious jewels, luxury hotels, and first class travel.” 

The older Pentecostals out of the “holiness tradition” found her twice suspect.  She divorced her evangelist husband and went off on her own. She did not permit tongues in the regular course of the miracle services. She died at 69.]

Christians need training in exercising their Holy Spirit gift of discernment of spirits so we are catching such end times deceptions of the serpent. We will be seeing more of these charismatic types of personalities come alive with miraculous manifestations of what seems like God’s presence in these darker times to come.

A friend of the world is at enmity with God.

Had Paul or the other apostles lived to see Katherine, they surely would have commanded the spirit of python to leave her. But today few Christians would or could. Believers have become so trusting of the rulers of darkness of this age.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Famous oracles, healers and movements are created by the same method they always were. A serpent power is welcomed into a family through some occult ritual. Once it’s in, it fights ruthlessly to stay there. This power won’t blatantly lie, as we see with the slave girl. Rather it performs charismatically. The best discerners notice that the spirit acts strangely, loves extravagance, and wears down the saints who are out preaching the pure gospel. But most professing Christians are drawn into python’s deceptive power.

The Apostle Paul knew the slave girl’s statements were from a counterfeit spirit. There was her odd mannerism, lack of meekness, her insistence, showiness, and need for attention. The apostle must have had compassion for her, knowing she’d likely been forced into bondage by this spirit at the hand of her owners. But as the girl continued to rant, he knew to use the name of Jesus so this power would be cast out of her.

Even for Paul her deliverance from this spirit of divination took inside an hour. Most bible versions suggest the spirit of divination came out of the slave girl immediately, but Young’s Literal tells us her deliverance was not immediate. The literal translation says “it came forth the same HOUR”. This deliverance occurred when the girl was still young. For an older oracle like Kuhlman, this spirit would likely take much longer to cast out. The reason is, demons continue to move INTO oracles throughout their lifetime to gain more and more use of the person, so the networks are much more complex.

SLAVE OF PYTHON OR MIRACLE WORKER?

So what do we do with this information? In this day and time, we ALL battle this spirit. If not within ourselves, then within our culture or our nation. What we can do is to learn how to look beyond signs and wonders that are arising within people with the spirit of python. We can go through a process of deliverance for ourselves, staying in the word of God, and praying the scriptures to keep our spirit man strong and able to fight any battles that are yet to come.

Even the most genuine believers are being drawn off-course these days. The bible says this would happen. But there are those Christians still willing to hear hard truths. Some will emerge from the trap of fascination with miracles and warn others about dangerous new movements labeled as Christian.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. I Corinthians 2:14

Brotherhoods representing the spirit of Python continue to operate as charities, gaining full access to underprivileged children and the elderly.

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. Psalms 118:8

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. Psalms 119:99,100

What You Can Do:

• • Pray: Make your house a place of prayer. Pray daily with your family, join prayer fasts with ministers who lead them. Luke 19:46: “Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.”
    
    
  • Study the Bible: Turn off the T.V. and spend time studying the Word of God. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” The Lord will reveal many things that you need to know about how to overcome. You can gain direction for your life, principles to live by, and most of all, you will strengthen your faith in God. We will all need faith to be able to prevail and help others in the future. Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
    
    
  • Assemble with like Believers: Strong networks or relationships will be important in the days ahead as we will need to help each other. We will need to risk reaching out over and over again until we find the other remnant church members who have the same mind for the true stripped down gospel. Hebrews 10:25: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
    
    
  • Reach out with the Gospel: As Christians we have been commissioned to take the good news of the gospel to the whole world. We all have the ministry of reconciliation, reconciling others to Jesus Christ by salvation. We must reach out to those we have been given a heart for, if only at first to speak our testimony or to support a ministry that we know is actively saving the souls we have a heart to save! Mark 16:15: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
    
    
  • Re-adjust Your Priorities: Seek God first and His righteousness. Place the importance on the above things, plus work on getting delivered of things that are keeping you in bondage to curses or soulish desires. Renounce the spiritual traditions of your ancestors and hearken to God’s voice, not entertainment. It will take both spiritual, emotional and physical readjustments if we are to be ready for the tribulation, persecution and other judgements that the whole world will be facing in the times to come.
