Pray For a Godly Husband or Wife
In this prayer we’ll be standing on the scriptural definition of marriage. By standing on God’s Word, not only do we honor God, but we also come under His protection and favor. I suggest creating a space in your home where you can pray daily. Spend time in prayer for your marriage, thanking the Lord for even small changes, revelations and healing. Make note of your answered prayers and write down inspiration you receive from the Holy Spirit. As you pray, the Holy Spirit will have you adapt this prayer (He will keep it biblical) so that it’s specifically tailored to your individual situation. Stay focused on the Word of God and its promises.
Song of Songs 3:2
I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
1 Samuel 16:12
… And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.”

All glorious is the princess in her chamber; her gown is embroidered with gold. In colorful garments she is led to the king;
PRAY:
Almighty God, You are the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Blessed Hope. You are Abba Father, the Ancient of Days, the First and the Last. I honor you, praise you and glorify your Name which is above all names. As a faith-filled, Spirit-filled Christian, I’m biblically guided to be rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; and continuing instant in prayer. I pray this prayer to You with sincerity, not with vain repetitions (Matt 6:7) — but with Truth (Psalm 146:18).
I’m aware that right at this very moment, satan, the father of lies, is devising plans, snares and gins against my having a godly marriage! (1 Peter 5:8) However I’m wise to satan’s devices (2 Cor 2:11), and I understand that I am to pray continually and you will listen to me. (Romans 12:12) (Jeremiah 21:12)
Lord, you are my strength which teaches me to war and to fight for Your blessings (Psalm 144:1). I am confident that You who began a good work in me will continue to complete your work in me until the day Christ Jesus returns. (Phil 1:6). I begin by renouncing any unconfessed unforgiveness or bitterness towards any person or persons (Mt 6:15). I choose to forgive each of them now, as you have so graciously forgiven me (Mark 11:24-25). I agree to bless those who curse me and I pray that you will demonstrate Your generous grace to those who have despitefully used me (Luke 6:28).
Father, at the beginning of creation, You proclaimed, “It is not good that man should be alone” and then You created Eve to be a suitable partner for Adam (Genesis 2:18). You consider it a good thing when a man finds his wife and the Lord favors him (Proverbs 18:22). I believe that You have put in me a desire to be married to a godly spouse. So I agree to find or be found by the spouse You have ordained for me, in Jesus’ Holy Name.
And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept. Genesis 29:11
Father, Your word says that marriage is honorable (Hebrews 13:4). In the name of Jesus, I ask that You would protect the godly spouse you have chosen for me, that he/she may live a long life alongside me. I rebuke any covetousness in my heart that would hold marriage, a wedding, a ring or a family as an idol (Exodus 20:3).
I rebuke, renounce and repent for any rebellion, pride, unbiblical beliefs or practices that would defile Your intended covenant of marriage. In the Name of Jesus Christ, I bind and cast out any spirit within me that does not agree with the marriage You planned for husband and wife.
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Genesis 28:1
Father, You designed marriage so that man and woman can work together; help each other if one of us falls; keep each other warm at night; and fight together against our common enemy. I acknowledge that in Christ, woman is not independent of man nor man of woman, but they are meant to rely on each other and support one another (I Corinthians 11:11).
I understand that what You have joined together, no human being must separate (Mark 10:9). A threefold cord is not quickly broken (Eccl 4:12). Your Word shows that marriage is valuable to You, that a prudent wife is from the Lord (Proverbs 19:14), and a wife of noble character is worth far more than rubies (Proverbs 31:10), which tells me that you see a wife who is refined by the Word of God as valuable as riches.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. Genesis 29:20
Father as You select my spouse, help me focus on renewing my mind to good discernment of Your Perfect Will. Keep my focus on You so that I do not rely on my own understanding (Romans 12:2) and that I do not seek worldly ways to find my spouse without prayerful consideration of Your direction.
I have faith that the promises in Your Word are true that the Lord’s Hand saves and Your ear hears (Isaiah 59:1). Lord I stand on your Word that you set the solitary in families (Psalm 68:6) and you make the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children (Psalm 113:9). By faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7) I believe your Word is true and that I will be blessed with a family that brings me great joy.
I pray that you bring me a spouse whom You know, who listens for, knows and obeys Your voice (John 10:27). Please bring me or lead me to a spouse who will cherish me and build me up (Proverbs 31:28); a spouse who will honor me (I Peter 3:7) and our marriage covenant made before God (2 Kings 23:3); a spouse who will be a good parent and understand the husband’s role as spiritual head, protector and provider (Eph 5:23); a spouse whom I will be attracted to physically, emotionally, and spiritually (Song of Solomon 1:2,15,16).
I agree and pray that the husband in our covenant would be prepared to love his wife as his own body, praise her (Proverbs 31:28) and not be bitter against her (Colossians 3:18), remembering that he who loves his wife loves himself (Eph 5:28). For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church (Ephesians 5:29). I agree with Your Word that the husband will live with his wife according to knowledge of the things of God, honoring the wife as having a smaller and weaker body frame, and honoring her as his co-heir of salvation, understanding that a husband’s neglect of honoring his wife can hinder his prayers (1 Peter 3:7). Lord let the husband demonstrate spiritual headship in the house that the wife can ask her husband about the things of Christ and he can answer (1 Cor 14:35).
I agree and pray that the wife in our covenant have wisdom and kindness on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26). Lord, prepare the wife to be subject to the husband, whom You chose for her, that he may be won without a word by his wife’s respectful and pure conduct (I Peter 3:1). Lord help and prepare the wife to labor side by side with her husband in the gospel (Phillippians 4). Father, as you call older women to be teachers of good things, to teach the younger women to be sober, discreet, innocent, unadorned, to love their husbands, and to love their children (Titus 2:3-5), I stand in agreement with your Word.
Father help us first love one another with brotherly affection, cultivating a friendship and then a marriage. (Romans 12:10). Prepare us to treat each other with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:2-3).
I confess Lord God that Jesus Christ is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17). Father, the Lord Jesus Christ is the One who can glue to me the spouse you have chosen for me, that we would live out our lives in marriage in a way that glorifies and honors You (1 Cor 10:31).
Father, I confess that it is true that You are preparing my (future) spouse and I to love Christ Jesus with all our heart, mind, soul and strength — believers after Your very heart (Matthew 22:37). Raise us up in Your Word, let us be meditating on Your precepts day and night, and bring us both success in all we do (Psalm 1, Joshua 1). Bless us and fill us with the knowledge of Your love (Philippians 1:9) and Your Holy Spirit (Matt 3:11, Acts 1:5). May we always abound in joy and in the fruits of the Spirit (Romans 15:13). Lord, keep our eyes in covenant to look away from physical attractiveness that would tempt lust (Job 31:1), and away from all other wicked things (Psalm 101:3), keeping our ways and hearts pure (Psalm 119:9-10).
Lord, let myself and my spouse prioritize marriage above all other earthly relationships, holding fast to each other, and becoming one flesh (Genesis 2:24) living in agreement with each other, empowering us to walk in harmony through life together (Amos 3:3). Lord, let us not be judgmental toward one another, understanding that the way we judge others we will receive like judgment (Matt 7:1-2).
Father, according to your Will (1 John 5:14), prepare myself and my (coming) spouse to be able and willing to freely offer our bodies to one another, not depriving one another (except by agreement for a limited time, that we may devote ourselves to prayer and healing; but then come together again), so that satan may not tempt us out of self control. (I Corinthians 7:3-5).
Abba Father, keep me from attaching myself to any wrong person by my deceitful heart (Jeremiah 7:14), soulish lusts (1 Peter 2:11) or crafty seduction (2 Tim 3:13). Guard us both from being unequally yoked with unbelievers or lawless, dark “believers”, whether in courting or marriage, in business partnership, or in fellowship. (2 Corinthians 6:14.)
Lord heal my heart and bind my wounds and please do the same for my (future) spouse. (Psalm 147:3) Lord God I offer my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You, which is my reasonable service (Romans 12:1). Lord, guard my sexual purity and the sexual purity of the spouse you have for me so that the marriage bed will be undefiled (Hebrews 13:4).
Lord God, instill in both of our hearts Your definition of love – a love that is patient and kind; a love that does not envy or boast; a love that is not arrogant or rude; one that does not insist on its own way and is not irritable or resentful; a love that does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Prepare us both that no corrupt communication would proceed out of our mouths, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to each other (Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 21:23).
I pray that both myself and my (God-ordained) spouse would have a genuine high regard for the sanctity of marriage, understanding that You will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous (Hebrews 13:4, Eph 5). Prepare us so that we would have the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Lord grant us hearts that are free from selfish ambition or conceit, and that in humility we would count each other more significant than ourselves. Lord prepare us to be able to follow Christ’s example, being willing to give up what we may be entitled to and willing to serve one another in tangible and sacrificial ways (Philippians 2:1-8).
Let our love for one another be intense in the Holy Spirit so that it covers any multitude of our past, or unknown, unconfessed sins. (1 Peter 4:8). Let our house together be a place where we may find rest (Ruth 1:9). Abba Father, be with us in distress, answer us when we call and give us honor. (Psalm 91:14-15). Let us confess our faults to one another, and fervently pray for one another, that together we may be healed (James 5:16).
Father, I yoke myself to you and give you my heavy burdens (Matt 11:30) so that I bring no heaviness but rather strength to my marriage (Psalms 119:28). I ask that my (coming) spouse also knows how to yoke himself (herself) to the Lord Jesus Christ and enter into His rest.
Father, in the Name of Jesus Christ, free the both of us even now from any hindrances to a healthy and godly marriage. You are the one who redeems our lives from the pit, who crowns us with love and compassion, who satisfies our desires with good things (Psalm 103:4-5).
In this period of waiting, I will contemplate my betrothal to You Lord, understanding the body of Christ, the church, is betrothed to the bridegroom and being prepared for the wedding supper.
Revelation 19:7-9
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
2 Corinthians 11:2
For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
Isaiah 54:5
For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called.
Lord You never come late. (Jeremiah 1:12). In Mark 11:24 Your Word declares that whatever I ask in prayer, to believe that I have received it, and it will be mine. Father, in Your time, You make all things beautiful. (Eccl 3:11). Your Word says the Lord will perfect that which concerns me and that your mercy endures forever and so I pray you will not forsake me, who you created (Psalm 138:8) to love, worship and serve you (Deut 11:13). Amen.
Luke 1:45
“And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord”
Worship and Give Gratefulness
Worship the Lord and thank Him for what he has done for you since you prayed last, even if it was just yesterday. Always take the time to list and thank ABBA for every blessing that comes into your life, whether great or seemingly small. If you are blessed mightily and feel led, perhaps give a gift of thanks to a food bank or a humble ministry that serves the “least of these”, the forgotten, those in deep crisis or need. Show God that you love His people as He has loved you.
