Biblical Marriage Ceremony Opening
Officiant: “We are here today to witness the Wedding Covenant Ceremony between (Bride Full Name) and (Groom Full Name).”
Officiant to the Couple:
As Deuteronomy 7:9 says that “God keeps his covenant and steadfast love for a thousand generations to those who love him and keep his commands,” so also are you agreeing to keep your marriage covenant by steadfastly loving one another, loving God and keeping His commands.
Defining the Covenant and the Reading of Vows
In the formation of a marriage covenant, vows are made. Vows are a binding obligation that you make with your mouth according to the Word of God. You will declare vows according to God’s design for marriage. As you read your vows, let it be known that “The Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your marriage covenant.” (Malachi 2:14)
STATEMENT FROM THE COUPLE
(Bride’s Name) and (Groom’s Name) would like to first thank God for giving them a spouse with a genuine high regard for the sanctity of marriage, and the importance of intentionally claiming spiritual deliverance from the bondages of evil. They glorify God for giving them the power to keep to sexual purity until marriage. (Hebrews 13:4, Eph 5). God deserves all credit for giving (bride and groom) the same love for God and for one another, causing them to be in full accord and of one mind in the things of God and righteousness. Both acknowledge having been blessed by God with a spouse who daily seeks Your healing and renewal, Your wisdom, Your deliverance and Your direction. God has given both (bride and groom) power and authority in the Lord, and has taught them to come to yoke their heavy burdens to the Lord Jesus Christ and enter into His rest.
As part of this marriage covenant, (Bride’s first name) will receive a new last name, the surname of her husband (Groom’s first name), just as believers will receive a new name at the marriage supper of the Lamb in Heaven when Jesus Christ and His bride, the church, are united forever. By (bride’s first name) taking (groom’s first name) last name, this symbolizes that you become one flesh. Your memorial of this union is the exchange of rings. Wear your rings as a continual reminder of your commitment to each other in covenant relationship.
Groom’s Vows:
(Bride’s first name), the Most High God has been working all this time to prepare us for each other and to serve Him together. As we stand before both God and man, making public our commitment to one another, I wish to make it known that I recognize first of all God’s authority over my life which is exercised from His loving heart. He has chosen me to be one of his own, and He is now my life. I recognize also that He has blessed me and entrusted to me your life as a blessing and a good thing, to obtain favor from the Lord. In recognition of these things, (Bride’s first name), I purpose to lead you in righteousness, in right spiritual headship by the Word of God and by the Holy Spirit’s power and witness. My heart’s desire is Christ and so let the fruit of that yield God’s wisdom, instruction and comfort in our marriage all the rest of our days. As Psalm 34:3 expressed my heart when I asked you to marry me, so it expresses my heart now: “O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.”
Bride’s Vows:
I promise to stand by your side throughout our lives as a virtuous woman in the Lord. I will be trustworthy as your wife by living in truth and honesty and by following your leading submissively as you are submitted unto Christ. In the strength of Jesus, I will strive to present myself, and our family with modest dignity. By ever seeking God’s wisdom, I will demonstrate noble character to bring gemlike value to your life so you can have full confidence in me. I vow to steer away from worldly ways and vanities but instead continue to render myself beautiful on the inside, in my heart and soul. I seek to carry the resplendency of the Lord which is His outward beautification of me as He has designed me. I also commit to approach you with a gentle, peaceful spirit, and when boldness in truth is required, to ask the Lord to arrange for your ear. (1 Peter 3:3-4). I will to love you, honor you, and show reverence to you as you are loving me and leading me in righteousness. I will to comfort you, encourage you, and do you only good as long as you live. (Proverbs 31:10-12) I will to be a faithful wife to you. And I vow to do you good and not evil all the days of your life, so that your heart can safely trust in me.
As your helpmeet at home and in ministry, I desire to work diligently with my hands in service to our marriage and family as well as to pour out my love to those who are broken, hopeless, oppressed and weary. I will strive together with you to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. My desire is for you as my husband to be respected because I keep for us a well ordered and joyful home. I pray to have a mouth that speaks in wisdom and that love will find expression in my words and acts of thoughtful kindness and gentle courtesy. I know that favor is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Lord, she will be praised. So I sing praise unto God’s name forever, that by His mercies, favor, strength and power, I may keep my vows. From this day forward, we shall be one. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Exchange of Rings (Officiant Reads to the Couple):
The Blessing of the Union (Officiant Reads):
I am now going to read the blessings that God purposes to come upon you according to the Word of God.
1 Peter 3:7 states that a man and his wife are to dwell together according to the knowledge of God. As you do so, as heirs together of the grace of life, your prayers will not be cut off but instead will be fruitful to bring forth God’s favor upon your lives.
Deuteronomy 28:1-14 states that as you diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God and do all that He commands, that all of these blessings will come on you and overtake you. You will be blessed in the city, blessed in the field, blessed in the fruit of your body, and blessed in the fruit of your ground. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will cause your enemies that rise up against you to be defeated before your face. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways for you shall chase your enemies and they shall fall before you by the sword of the Word of God. The Lord shall command His blessing upon you and in your storehouse and in all that you undertake. He will bless you in the land that He gives you. He will establish you as a holy people unto Himself and He will walk among you and be your God. He will make you to have a surplus of prosperity and open to you His good treasury with the heavens giving rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand. The Lord shall make you the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath, as you are watchful to do the commandments of the Lord your God.
